Formthotics Medical System

The Formthotics Medical System is a full-service, evidence-based approach designed to help clinicians assess, manage, and treat patients effectively. By combining detailed patient assessment with tailored orthotic customisation, the system ensures optimal outcomes for a wide range of foot and lower limb conditions.

Formthotics Medical System

Assess function: 6 Tests™

The 6 Tests are a series of objective clinical examinations that improve patient assessment. Each test is sequentially aligned and collectively provides a comprehensive clinical profile. This systematic approach ensures precise evaluations, forming a strong basis for accurate diagnosis and patient management. The 6 Tests include:

  • test 1

Test 1: Foot Morphology and Motion Test

Assesses foot structure, alignment, and joint range of motion in a non-weight-bearing position to understand how the foot compensates under weight-bearing conditions.

  • test 2

    Test 2: Alignment Test

Observes the patient’s relaxed stance and gait to identify any structural deviations that may contribute to lower limb issues.

  • Test 3: Windlass (Jack’s) Test

Evaluates the windlass mechanism’s function during toe-off, which is crucial for effective forward propulsion and detecting potential issues in the medial arch.

  • test 4

    Test 4: Supination Resistance Test

Measures how much force is needed to supinate the foot, helping to determine the level of support required in orthotics.

  • Test 5: Proximal Control Knee Bend Test

Assesses balance and lower limb muscle strength by observing knee and foot alignment during a weight-bearing knee bend.

  • functional neuromotor balance test

    Test 6: Neuromotor Balance Test

Tests balance, agility, and neuromotor function through three options: single limb balance, star excursion, and forefoot stability, revealing potential gait and stability issues.

Improve function: 6 Steps™

The 6 Steps are an essential stage of the Formthotics Medical System. They are a progressive approach to prescription, modification, and ongoing patient-centred management using the information gained in the assessment stage (the 6 tests).

  • step 1

Step 1: Selecting, Fitting, and Heating Formthotics Orthotics

Choose the appropriate Formthotics model based on patient needs and shoe type, then heat-mould for a customised fit that aligns with the foot’s contours.

  • step 2

    Step 2: Patient Adjustment Period

Allow patients a break-in period to get used to their new Formthotics, gradually increasing wear time to ensure comfort and effectiveness.

  • step 3

    Step 3: Rearfoot Modification

Apply medial or lateral rearfoot wedges to adjust alignment and manage excessive pronation, helping to relieve pain or improve biomechanics.

  • addition on formthotics

    Step 4: Forefoot Modifications

Use wedges or metatarsal domes to apply targeted force to the forefoot, enhancing stability and function, particularly in cases requiring support of the Windlass mechanism.

  • step 5

    Step 5: In-Shoe Testing

Observe the patient’s stance and gait with the Formthotics in place, checking for comfort, fit, and effectiveness in supporting foot mechanics during movement.

  • Step 6: Ongoing Patient Management

Schedule follow-up appointments to assess the orthotics' effectiveness, discuss any needed adjustments, and ensure they continue to meet the patient’s needs over time.
